N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine. Cysteine occurs naturally in protein-containing foods, while NAC is typically available as a food supplement.

NAC contributes to the body’s supply of cysteine, which is used in the production of glutathione, an important antioxidant produced naturally by the body. NAC is sometimes combined with nutrients such as molybdenum and selenium, which have roles in normal enzyme function and protection of cells from oxidative stress.
