TUDCA ( tauroursodeoxycholic acid )is a natural digestive fluid made in the liver. Black bears produce huge quantities of it. Humans not so much.
TUDCA is a naturally-occurring salt in the liver, it has potential benefits as a supplement in treating the diseases of this large, independent and vital organ and establish a good bile flow.
Key benefits of taking TUDCA:
- Support healthy liver function
- Promote Liver enzymes in a normal range
- Support gut and intestinal health
- Provide Neurological support
- Optimize healthy insulin action
Below is a list of some of the conditions that can interrupt bile flow and the findings of TUDCA research.
Enzyme Excess. The liver produces two vital enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which must be maintained at a particular level. Damage can cause levels to rise abnormally. Studies indicate that TUDCA supplements may be able to lower enzyme levels and increase bile flow.
Liver Cirrhosis. This occurs when healthy liver cells are replaced with scar tissue. According to the American Liver Foundation, alcohol and the hepatitis C virus are the two most common causes. Fat accumulation is another culprit. The more scar tissue buildup, the more liver function is diminished. Research suggest TUDCA may be an effective treatment.
Hepatitis. Caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis D (HDV) and hepatitis E (HEV). HCV is the most problematic. The American Liver Foundation estimates that 2.7 million Americans are infected with hepatitis C. The foundation also reports that as many as 75% don’t even know they’re affected. Studies conducted to determine the effect of supplemental TUDCA on subjects with hepatitis C as well as B, and D showed promise in preventing the viruses from invading the liver, treating the disease and in reducing damage.
Protection from Steroid Cycles. Frequent use of oral steroids can greatly damage the liver. Bodybuilders and weightlifters known for heavy steroid use, may benefit from TUDCA according to studies
Humans also make a more diluted version called ursodeoxycholic acid. TUDCA is a conjugate of taurine and ursodeoxycholic acid. The organosulfonic amino acid taurine combines and exchanges molecules with deoxycholate salt. (Think of TUDCA as UDCA with a T.)
For centuries China and other Asian countries have collected bile or TUDCA from bears for traditional medicine. In Turkey it has used it to treat cholesterol gallstones.
Plants do not make TUDCA, so you cannot get it from food; The first synthetic version was manufactured in Japan in 1954.
Today countries like the United States, Italy and China are considering its efficacy in liver diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, weight loss and other pathologies.
