Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin.
The EU NRV (Nutrient Reference Value) is 200mcg for adults but it is 400mcg for pregnant women.
Folate deficiency can result in many health problems. Low levels of Folate can also lead to homocysteine accumulation.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommend that “All women, from the moment they begin trying to conceive until 12 weeks of gestation, should take a Folic Acid supplement (400 μg Folic Acid daily). Women who have had a fetus diagnosed as affected by a neural tube defect or have given birth to a baby with a neural tube defect should: receive information on the risk of recurrence; be advised on the protective effect of periconceptional Folic Acid supplementation.
Low maternal Folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus.
Folate is necessary for the production of new DNA, and new DNA is needed for all new cells.
One capsule per day with a meal.
